How to glue Epoxy

How to Bond Epoxy

Epoxies are polymers containing epoxy groups or oxirane rings in their molecular structure. They are typically non-melting, thermosetting materials, but there are also linear, high-molecular thermoplastic epoxies. Epoxies can be cured with many different hardeners. Their chemical structure and curing mechanism can vary, and they can be mixed with a wide range of additives and fillers, leading to their use in numerous applications. Epoxies are used as adhesives, coatings, and binders in composite structures. Specialty types include electrically conductive, thermally conductive, fiber-reinforced, wear-resistant, and machinable grades.

Due to the wide variety of fillers and different types of epoxy resins, epoxy properties vary significantly. Epoxies are generally very strong, heat-, chemical-, and wear-resistant plastics. Their excellent resistance to wear and chemicals has led to their widespread use in floor coatings, pipe and component coatings in chemical plants, and marine applications. Epoxies are also well known for their adhesive properties, which constitute a large part of their use. Most epoxies are resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including hydrocarbons, esters, bases, and salts.

Typically, the surface tension of epoxy materials ranges between 30 and 50 dyn/cm. This is a general estimate, and exact values can vary depending on the epoxy's composition and treatment.

Epoxy is marketed under various trade names such as Araldite, Conapoxy, Eccogel, Eccoseal, Epolite, EPON, Epoxylite, Lytex, Maraglas, Paraplast, Fixmaster Poxy Pak, Quatrex, Ren, Scotchply, Stycast, and Tactix.

Bonding
Ensure that the surfaces to be bonded are clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, or other contaminants. A non-oily cleaning solvent can be used.

Choose an adhesive suitable for bonding epoxy.

Allow the epoxy to fully cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Once the adhesive has cured, check the bond to ensure it is strong and durable. This is important, as each application has different strength requirements depending on use and function.
