How to glue glass
Gluing Glass (glue for glass)
Glass is used in industry for an extremely wide range of applications: windows, containers, electrical insulators, fluorescent tubes, cars, mirrors, watches, glasses, fiber optic cables, and much more. It is especially the optical properties of glass that make it an attractive material. It is inherently transparent, but it can easily be colored, as seen in beer bottles, and even frosted. Glass is rigid, hard, and chemically resistant to water and weak acids.
How to glue glass
For optimal adhesion, the parts should always be cleaned before gluing.
Since light can easily penetrate glass, UV/light-curing adhesive is often a great choice for this task.
It offers good strength, a wide range of viscosities, easy application, and very fast curing.
Additionally, UV/light-curing adhesive usually has high heat resistance, and it is easy to find a colorless transparent version, which makes the joint easy to hide or even invisible — an advantage when working with transparent materials. The benefits are many.
Some types of silicone adhesive are also designed to bond well to glass.
These provide the flexibility of silicone and are extremely heat resistant.
This results in flexible adhesive joints, which can be advantageous especially when bonding glass to a dissimilar material such as steel. Steel expands when exposed to heat, so silicone adhesive is a good choice here, as the stress from different thermal expansion is absorbed in the adhesive joint.
Silicone adhesive also has a long open time, which ensures correct assembly.
An MS polymer adhesive can also be an option for bonding glass.
Such adhesives have relatively low heat resistance. On the other hand, they are available as both 1-component and 2-component options, they can be painted over (unlike silicone), they can cure under water, and they are considered mild adhesives in the sense that they do not pollute the working environment with fumes or similar.
Glass can be bonded with other types of adhesives depending on the purpose of the joint.
We often bond glass and metal with methyl methacrylate adhesives (MMA), as these are 2-component adhesives with a short curing time.
