How to glue epichlorohydrin rubber (ECO-Rubber)

Epichlorohydrin Rubber or epichlorohydrin rubber (ECO-Rubber) also has other abbreviations referring to different types of epichlorohydrin rubber. These are: CO, GCO, GECO.

All epichlorohydrin rubbers offer low temperature flexibility; resistance to oils, fuels, and common solvents; low gas permeability; good weather resistance and good dynamic properties. The specific degree to which these properties manifest varies with each type of epichlorohydrin rubber. All epichlorohydrin rubbers have good resistance to UV, ozone, and thermal degradation. For the lowest gas permeability, the homopolymer is the preferred polymer choice. If the ECO copolymer is difficult to cure, or the properties from sulfur-based curing systems are unacceptable, a copolymer or terpolymer containing the allylglycidyl ether monomer can be used. The unsaturated position allows for curing with a peroxide-based system.

ECO (epichlorohydrin rubber) is widely used in various industries. It is used to manufacture components such as hoses, seals, and O-rings. Within industrial applications, it is used to produce gaskets, rollers, belts, and bladders.

Normally, the surface energy of ECO is in the range of 30 to 35 dyn/cm. This level may vary depending on the production process and any adjustments in the material composition.

ECO, or epichlorohydrin rubber, is known under the trade name HYDRIN. This material has excellent properties such as low temperature flexibility, resistance to oils, fuels, and solvents, as well as good weather resistance.

Bonding

Ensure that the surface of ECO is clean and free from dirt, oil, grease, or other contaminants. Use a non-greasing cleaner. Due to the nature of ECO, it may be beneficial to surface treat the parts with a primer or perform corona- or plasma-treatment. This improves the adhesive's ability to bond to the ECO material.

Select an adhesive that is compatible with ECO's chemical properties.

  • Cyanoacrylate adhesives generally have good adhesion to many types of rubber and plastic materials, including ECO. Cyanoacrylate cures very quickly upon contact with moisture in the air and surfaces, making it ideal for applications where fast bonding and part fixation is necessary.
  • Polyurethane adhesives can be an effective solution for bonding ECO (epichlorohydrin/ethylene oxide copolymer) in certain applications. Polyurethane cures quickly if a 2-component version is used. This allows for fast bonding and immediate handling of the bonded components. It is important to choose a polyurethane adhesive that is compatible with ECO's specific properties and surface requirements.
  • The correct type of contact adhesive can also be used on ECO rubber (epichlorohydrin/ethylene oxide copolymer). The curing time for contact adhesives is, however, significantly longer than the first two adhesives and generally less suitable in a production line.

After curing, the strength of the bond should be tested, especially if it is to be used in critical applications.
