How to Glue Polyethersulfone (PES Plastic)

How to Bond Polyethersulfone (PES Plastic)

Polyethersulfone (PES) is an amorphous thermoplastic in which the structure consists of alternating aromatic groups connected by oxygen and sulfur dioxide groups. It is mainly used for high-temperature applications.

The most notable properties of PES are its transparency, good mechanical properties, and excellent thermal stability. The mechanical and electrical properties of PES show low sensitivity to temperature changes and stress. Furthermore, the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures can be significantly enhanced by annealing. PES has low smoke emission and can withstand long-term exposure to both air and water at elevated temperatures. PES is chemically resistant to most inorganic chemicals, fats, aliphatic hydrocarbons, as well as leaded and unleaded gasoline. Typical of the polysulfone family, PES has low weather resistance and is degraded by UV light, making unfilled PES unsuitable for outdoor use. The main disadvantage when bonding PES is its extreme sensitivity to stress cracking. However, adding glass fillers, using adhesive accelerators, and/or annealing the PES significantly increases its resistance to stress cracking.

PES is widely used in electronics, industrial components, and medical applications due to its excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and thermal stability.

Polyethersulfone (PES) typically has a surface tension between 36 and 50 dyn/cm.

These are known trade names for PES: Victrex PES and Ultrason.

Bonding
Thoroughly clean the PES surface to remove any contamination such as oil, dust, or grease. Use a suitable cleaning agent, such as a non-abrasive cleaning solution.

Select an adhesive specifically formulated to bond PES.

Allow the PES adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This ensures the adhesive achieves the necessary strength and bond quality.

After curing, it is important to perform a quality test to ensure the bond meets the required strength and durability.

Manufacturers
Polyethersulfone (PES) is produced under various trade names by leading companies such as BASF (Ultrason) and Victrex (Victrex PES).
