How to Bond Polyester
Thermosetting polyesters and alkyd compounds are produced by the reaction between an organic alcohol and an organic acid. The term alkyd is used for resins that employ the smallest amounts of monomer. Polyesters can be created with a wide variety of different monomers and catalysts. They are known for their excellent electrical properties and are widely used in household appliances that require high temperature stability.
Thermosetting polyesters and alkyd molding compounds are dense materials with specific gravities ranging from 1.2 to 2.0. They are also very strong and rigid. Polyesters have good dielectric strength at high temperatures and exceptional resistance to degradation under electrical arcing and tracking. Thermal and dimensional stability is good up to 230°C. Thermosetting polyesters have good chemical resistance to many chemicals, including alcohols, ethers, salts, organic and inorganic acids. The surface tension of polyester typically falls within the range of 36 to 50 dyn/cm.
Polyester is widely used in a variety of applications, including appliances, switch boxes, breaker components, and encapsulation of electronics.
