Phenolic resins are typically produced by reacting phenol and formaldehyde. These resins are then heat-cured to form the highly crystalline, thermoset phenol polymer. Due to their thermoset structure and high crosslink density, phenolic resins exhibit exceptional stiffness, dimensional stability, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. The main disadvantage of phenolic resins is that they are difficult to process and require heat-curing cycles under pressure. Additionally, phenolic resins are available only in dark colors due to oxidative discoloration during polymerization. Insulating adhesives, molded objects, and adhesives used in plywood and waferboard are some of their many applications.
Phenolic plastic has moderate strength compared to other plastics, but higher hardness and greater stiffness than most thermoplastics and many thermosets. Some grades of phenolic plastic are comparable to more expensive engineering materials, with continuous operating temperatures above 204°C. Furthermore, phenolic plastic maintains excellent electrical properties at these elevated temperatures. It shows excellent creep resistance, very low mold shrinkage, and only minor dimensional changes with temperature. Typically for a thermoset plastic, its chemical resistance is excellent. Phenolic plastic resists hydrocarbons, phenols, and ethers.
Phenolic plastic is widely used to manufacture handles, buttons, brake components, electric motors, fuse blocks, electrical terminals, outlets, control housings, and various adhesive products. Its high hardness, stiffness, and excellent electrical properties make it ideal for such industrial applications.
Surface tension for phenolic plastic typically ranges from 36 to 50 dyn/cm.

Bonding
Bonding phenolic plastic requires thorough surface cleaning to remove contaminants such as oils or grease. Use a non-aggressive cleaning solvent. Primer or pretreatment may be necessary to improve adhesion.
Choose a phenolic plastic adhesive compatible with the plastic’s properties and intended use.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for curing time and temperature to achieve a strong, durable bond.
