How to glue Allyl Ester (DAP-Plastic)

How to Glue Allyl Ester (DAP)

Diallyl phthalate (DAP) is the most widely used of the allyl esters, which belong to the polyester family. The basic structure of the diallyl phthalate monomer consists of a chain of benzene rings and allyl groups, formed through a condensation reaction between phthalic anhydride and allyl alcohol. The monomer is then converted into a thermosetting resin using a peroxide, which can be further polymerized to produce thermosetting plastics by various methods.

Allyl ester (DAP) typically has a surface tension reported in the range of 30–40 dyn/cm. For more precise values, consult the manufacturer’s technical datasheets.

Allyl ester is among the most versatile thermosetting resins. It is chosen for applications requiring excellent dimensional stability, easy moldability, low water absorption, and outstanding electrical properties. Diallyl phthalate has a continuous service temperature as high as 260 °C. Diallyl isophthalate, a similar but more expensive resin, may be used when superior dimensional and thermal stability is required. Allyl esters have excellent resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons, oils, and alcohols, but are not recommended for use with phenols and oxidizing agents.

Allyl esters are widely used in industrial applications, including electrical connectors, switches, and transformer housings in the electronics industry. They are also used in various pipes, ducts, junction boxes, and for manufacturing radomes.

Some known trade names for DAP include Cosmic DAP and Dapex.

Bonding
Ensure surfaces to be bonded are clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, or contaminants. Use a suitable non-oily cleaner if necessary.

Select the right adhesive:

  • Cyanoacrylate (super glue): Fast curing, provides instant strong bonding.
  • Methyl methacrylate adhesive (MMA): Strong, impact-resistant, chemical-resistant, transparent. Widely used in industry.
  • UV adhesive: Cures quickly under UV light, high transparency, chemical resistance, and precise application.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the chosen adhesive, as procedures vary. Evaluate bonding strength for your specific application to ensure performance.

Manufacturers
DAP is marketed under several brand names, including:

Cosmic DAP (Cosmic Plastics)

Dapex (Rogers Corporation)
