Protection of sensors at high temperatures

How to encapsulate and protect sensors at high temperatures with epoxy casting resin

Do you want to protect electronic components such as sensors even at high temperatures and in a way that is easy to handle?

There are adhesive types, such as epoxy, specially designed for this purpose.

We often see a need for adhesives/casting resins that are particularly good at bonding various types of plastics such as PA or ABS.
Even with PE, a compressive shear strength of 20 MPa can be achieved after plasma pretreatment, although this inexpensive and resistant plastic is difficult to bond due to its low surface tension.

Of course, we recommend that you contact us for the optimal solution for your application. But with rigid encapsulation (elongation at break 5%) and a temperature resistance of up to 180 °C, our encapsulation epoxy is often a perfect choice.
After 1,000 hours of storage at maximum operating temperature or at 85 °C and 85% humidity, the product's mechanical properties remain unchanged.

In addition, the adhesive is resistant to oil and fuel, making it particularly suitable for use in engine compartments – for example, for encapsulating sensors and circuit boards or for sealing structures.

The epoxy resin achieves this stability without any fillers, which provides many advantages in terms of processing.
There is no risk of filler settling, and therefore this type of casting resin requires neither stirring nor degassing, resulting in a simpler system design.
The epoxy casting resins are also formulated with good flow characteristics, further simplifying the process.

These epoxy encapsulation resins are available as both 1-component and 2-component systems.
However, dispensing guns with static mixing nozzles give the feel of working with a 1-component adhesive.
They can be used in both fully automated production and are also suitable for semi-automated/manual processes.

The curing time is designed for fast processes (e.g. curing in 10 minutes), but depending on the epoxy type, heat may be required after dispensing.
Alternatively, longer curing times can be used to save energy and costs.
