How to Glue PEEK Plastic (Bonding Polyetheretherketone)
Adhesive for PEEK Plastic (bonding of polyetheretherketone)
PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a high-performance technical plastic that has excellent mechanical strength and dimensional stability, while also being highly resistant to harsh chemicals. PEEK is hydrolysis resistant to steam, water, and seawater due to its very low surface energy, which leads to poor wetting properties. The surface of PEEK is therefore extremely resistant to chemical reactions, making bonding/adhesion to PEEK a very difficult process.
There are several different types of PEEK, each with different properties. Several of these types can be bonded with epoxy glue, silicone adhesive, or cyanoacrylate (also called superglue or instant glue).
When the above adhesives do not provide sufficient strength for the selected type of PEEK, it is necessary to use adhesives specially developed for bonding high-temperature resistant thermoplastics with other non-compatible materials. The best type of adhesive for this purpose is specially formulated heat-curing epoxy.
In tests of the bonded component, it was subjected to a shear strength test at a storage temperature of 85°C and 85% humidity. When the component surfaces were pretreated with plasma treatment, the measured shear strength reached up to 40 N/mm².
We can offer high adhesion strength with or without pre-plasma treatment. In a test where component surfaces were not plasma pretreated, the measured shear strength was about 20 N/mm². Although this value is lower compared to the plasma-treated condition, the strength remains high and the production process and overall manufacturing costs are reduced.
