How to Bond Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT Plastic)

Bonding of Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT Plastic)

Polybutylene terephthalate is a thermoplastic polyester related to polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is a white and non-transparent material that is partially crystalline. PBT is characterized by high strength, stiffness, and hardness. It is used for certain components under car hoods, rollers, coupling parts for office machines, and base plates for household appliances.

Bonding
For optimal adhesion, the surfaces should always be cleaned before bonding.

There are many options when bonding PBT. Often, a good cyanoacrylate adhesive (super glue) is the obvious choice. It offers good strength and easy dosing both manually and automatically. However, it is advisable to treat the surface with a primer first.
If bonding PBT to metal, a 2-component epoxy adhesive can also be a good choice. This adhesive does not shrink and is suitable for parts exposed to high mechanical stress.
If bonding PBT to transparent materials, a UV/light-curing adhesive is a better option. The advantage of this adhesive is its extremely short curing time.
Finally, a 2-component methyl methacrylate adhesive can be mentioned as an option for small and medium-sized tasks. This adhesive is resistant to many chemicals and bonds well to various materials, but not to soft materials such as rubber.
