How to bond Polyoxymethylene (POM Plastic)/Acetal

Bonding of Polyoxymethylene (POM Plastic)/Acetal

Polyoxymethylene, also known as Acetal, is commonly abbreviated as POM and is a plastic material used across many industries. It offers excellent hardness, rigidity, and toughness. POM plastic is resistant to oil, alcohol, and most bases. However, it is relatively vulnerable to many different acids. On the other hand, it has very good electrical insulating properties.
POM is not inherently UV-stable and is therefore not always suitable for outdoor use. There is an exception, though: black and specially stabilized types of POM can be used outdoors. It is used in gears, rollers, screws, guide discs, and in the automotive industry for hinges and fuel caps.

Bonding
For optimal adhesion, surfaces should always be cleaned before gluing.

POM has highly developed chemical resistance, which can make it challenging to achieve strong adhesion. However, several good solutions are available. With POM, it's important to roughen the surface before applying adhesive. This can be done via chemical etching or mechanical abrasion.

If POM is to be bonded to metal, a 2-component epoxy adhesive can achieve a high bond strength. A 2-component polyurethane-based adhesive will also adhere to POM but may require surface treatment first. These adhesives come in all viscosities and with varying hardness levels.
Alternatively, a primer can be applied, allowed to dry, and then bonded using a suitable cyanoacrylate (super glue). Cyanoacrylate is easy to apply and, as the name suggests, cures extremely quickly.
