How to glue SBR rubber

Bonding of SBR Rubber

SBR stands for Styrene Butadiene Rubber. It is a rubber made from styrene and butadiene. It is a fairly elastic rubber type with good tensile and abrasion strength, which can vary widely in hardness, making it an attractive material in many applications. In industry, it is used for conveyor belts, tires, couplings, shoe soles, and much more.

Bonding
For optimal adhesion, surfaces should always be cleaned before bonding.

SBR rubber has a relatively low surface tension (32 mN/m), which can make bonding challenging. This can be addressed by surface treatment.
Either by applying a primer immediately before bonding, but the surface must be completely dry before adhesive application.
Alternatively, plasma or corona treatment can be used to increase surface tension.

Many contact adhesives bond well to SBR rubber, but...
...in industry, this is not the optimal choice. The adhesive must be applied, then the solvent needs to evaporate for a while before parts can be joined. The curing time is relatively long.

The solution
In industry, these tasks are solved using a primer and a cyanoacrylate adhesive (super glue) designed for bonding these types of rubber. Cyanoacrylates are available as universal adhesives bonding well to many materials and also as variants tailored for specific materials like SBR rubber.

The curing time is naturally very fast, and dosing is simple whether done manually or automated.
Most cyanoacrylates also have good heat and chemical resistance.

Recommended: Super glue / Cyanoacrylate (also called secondary adhesive)
