How to glue Stainless Steel

Bonding Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a term that covers steel containing at least 10.5% chromium. However, the majority of stainless steel consists of iron and may also contain other materials such as carbon or nickel. There are five different types of stainless steel with distinct qualities. When it comes to bonding stainless steel, the type of steel is not decisive for the adhesion.
Stainless steel is widely used in industry. Pipes, sheets, beams, and much more often come in stainless steel. As the name indicates, it is well suited for outdoor use due to its high corrosion resistance— a quality not found in regular steel.

Bonding
For optimal adhesion, the surfaces should always be cleaned before bonding begins.

There are several advantages to bonding stainless steel compared to other joining techniques such as drilling or welding. First of all, the component to be joined is not weakened. Secondly, a significantly better result can be achieved by not distorting the surface of the component. Finally, the surface remains intact in case the parts need to be separated, modified, or repaired.

Several types of adhesives can be used to bond stainless steel, either to other stainless steel or to different materials. For example, some high-strength two-component epoxy adhesives are especially suited for the task. Also, two-component MS polymer adhesives or two-component methyl methacrylate adhesives can be used successfully.
Polyurethane adhesives can also be used, but attention should be paid to their somewhat limited heat resistance. On the other hand, polyurethane adhesives are available in a wide range of hardness and curing times.
Using UV/light-curing adhesives results in higher heat resistance than polyurethane adhesives. UV adhesives also come in many viscosities and hardnesses, are easy to dose, and cure very quickly. However, at least one of the parts to be joined must be transparent so the light can penetrate the material and cure the adhesive.
